This man Cyrus Oguna: Outgoing government spokesperson
After serving as the government spokesperson for three years, Colonel (Rtd) Cyrus Odhiambo Oguna has left office.
The former career military officer oversaw one of the most sensitive times in government policy and communication, playing a crucial role in communicating government policies, advice, and even Covid19 statistics to the public.
During his time as the face of the government, Colonel (Rtd) Oguna was also at the forefront of the Miguna Miguna saga, which saw him making several statements regarding the politician’s status in the country.
In one statement, he said, “The vocal politician is free to return to the country once his documents are in order,” which eventually took the intervention of the new administration for Miguna to be allowed back into the country.
Before his appointment as the government spokesperson, Colonel (Rtd) Oguna held various positions relating to the management of personnel, operations, training, and communications within the Kenya Defense Forces and the government.
He served as the Defense Advisor/Attaché at Kenya’s High Commission in Tanzania between 2014 and 2017 and was the in-charge of the Kenya Defense Forces Public Affairs Office and Spokesman for KDF at the onset of Operation Linda Nchi between 2011 and 2013.
His time as the Spokesman for KDF saw him constantly keeping the country informed on the operations of the KDF officers, especially during the capture of Kismayo. He also headed KDF’s Intelligence Training School before his time as the Spokesman.
Colonel (Rtd) Oguna holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Nairobi and is currently pursuing a second Master’s degree in International Studies from the same institution.
He is also a graduate of the prestigious National Defense College, Kenya, and has been awarded several medals, including the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS).
Colonel (Rtd) Oguna is married with two children and is expected to continue his academic pursuits.
The Public Service Commission has today, February 7, announced a vacancy in the office and called for applications.
