SHA registration hits 22 million
More than 22 million Kenyans have registered with the Social Health Authority in just eight months, with April marking the highest monthly registration period at 775,000 new enrollees, according to Ministry of Health data.
The data shows that more than 6.3 million Kenyans aged 18-35 are now SHA beneficiaries.
“Those aged 36-55 are 5,310,000. Those below the age of 18 are 4,380,000, while those above 55 years of age are 2.5 million Kenyans,” said Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
Mr Duale said SHA now has 18.5 million active registrations, adding that 3,642,565 clients transitioned from the now-defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the new health scheme.
“The total registration as of May 10 is 22,165,249, while the average number of new registrations per day is 50,000. The average number of Kenyans doing means testing per day is 25,000, paying an average of Sh20 million.
“The total number of those who have done means testing now stands at 4,783,546,” he told Nation.
A means testing tool is a function within the Integrated Health Technology System that uses computational algorithms to evaluate a person’s lifestyle after which it determines the amount they are supposed to pay.
For this to happen, according to SHA, the registration template has a curated page of 17 questions they will ask you and using that information depending on how you respond, their tool will be able to calculate within the system and tell you how much you are expected to pay annually.
According to the CS, Mombasa County leads in SHA registrations at 695,494 out of a target population of 1,190,987, which means 58.4 per cent of this population is registered. Bomet County follows at 448,806 (51.2 per cent) against a target population of 875,689, Nyeri comes third at 380,042 (50.1 per cent) against a target population of 759,164 while Elgeyo Marakwet is fourth with 218,491 (48.1 per cent) registrations against a target population of 454,480.
Kirinyaga County came in fifth with 291,066 (47.7 per cent) SHA registrations against a target population of 610,411, Kisumu County followed with 511,644 (44.3 per cent ) against a target population of 1,155,574, Lamu County registered 63,195(43.9 per cent) Kenyans against a target population of 143,920, Kericho County recorded 390,751 (43.3 per cent) against a target population of 901,777, Embu County followed with 258,942(42.5 per cent) registrations against a target population of 608,599 while Tharaka Nithi County registered 162,695(41.4 per cent) a target population of 393,177.
Last month while appearing before Parliament, Mr Duale explained that despite Taifa Care working well, the biggest challenge is that Kenyans are thronging referral health facilities to be treated for ailments that are supposed to be sorted out by Level 1,2,3,4 and 5 facilities, thereby putting a strain on the country’s main specialised health facilities.
“Today, if a SHA member is admitted to an intensive care unit, SHA pays Sh28,000 , which was previously zero under NHIF. Today, SHA covers cancer treatment,” CS Duale highlighted, adding that at the moment, all surgeries are now covered under SHA.
“Maternity services are also supported by SHA at an enhanced rate of Sh30,000. These critical services were not available under the former NHIF-defined structure. We will continue enhancing the SHA benefits package until we eliminate the culture of medical fundraisers and WhatsApp group appeals,” the CS told MPS.
