Governor Nyong’o reverses suspension of demos in Kisumu

Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has rescinded a statement he made earlier in which he urged for the county’s anti-government protests to be put on hold.

Nyong’o announced that he and his supporters would take part in the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party demonstrations in the county in a fresh statement on March 29, 2023.

According to the governor, Kisumu residents are still devoted to Kenyans’ freedom to peacefully congregate, petition, and demonstrate against the government.

“After consultations with the national leadership of Azimio, we want to assure you that we in Azimio believe in the rights of Kenyans to peacefully assembly, petition and demonstrate against the government,” said Governor Nyong’o.

Pope Francis spends night in hospital after respiratory infection

86-year-old Pope Francis spent the night at a hospital in Rome, where he will continue to be treated on Thursday for a respiratory infection, according to the Vatican.

Initially, a spokesperson stated that the pope was admitted to Gemelli hospital in Rome on Wednesday for previously arranged medical tests. However, later the spokesperson disclosed that Francis had reported “breathing difficulties” in recent days.

The Vatican spokesperson, Matteo Bruni, stated that tests revealed a non-Covid-19 respiratory infection that necessitates “a few days of suitable hospital medical treatment.” According to a Vatican source, the pope has cancelled his appointments for Thursday morning.

This hospitalization occurred a few weeks after the pontiff’s ten-year anniversary as head of the Catholic Church and attracted a handful of journalists to camp outside the hospital on Wednesday night.

Public Service Commission begins search for new CBK bosses

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has issued a notice stating that it is seeking suitable individuals to fill the roles of Governor and Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). The announcement, which was made in local media, specifies that candidates for these positions must hold Kenyan citizenship and possess a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in subjects such as Economics, Banking, Finance, or Law. Additionally, they should have at least a decade of experience in senior management in relevant areas and exhibit expertise or familiarity with monetary, financial, banking, and economic topics.

Once the applicants have been screened by the Public Service Commission, they will be presented to the National Assembly for approval. The President will then designate the chosen candidates for a four-year term, which may be renewed once.

Mt. Kenya reafforestation attempts

The residents of Buuri in Meru county have come together to help restore parts of the Mt. Kenya forest that have been damaged by forest fires over the years.

Hundreds of residents participated in the effort, planting over 23,000 indigenous trees on Tuesday.  However, more than one million tree seedlings will be required to fully rehabilitate the degraded portions of the forest.

This collaborative endeavor demonstrates the importance of community involvement in preserving natural habitats and highlights the potential for citizen-led initiatives to support environmental conservation efforts.

Kenya’s ex-football boss cleared of corruption charges

A magistrate’s court on Wednesday acquitted Kenya’s former football chief Nick Mwenda of corruption charges, ruling they were “unfounded and unconstitutional”.

Mwendwa, 44, faced accusations of misappropriating 38 million shillings ($337,000) marked for the development of football in the East African nation.

“This court finds that the fair trial of the accused is grossly threatened… the charges are unfounded and unconstitutional,” ruled Kiambu senior principal magistrate Wilson Rading.

Mwendwa was first arrested in November 2021 after the Kenyan government disbanded the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and set up a caretaker committee to run the game over the alleged financial impropriety during his tenure.
