You’ve failed the country: MPs tell country bosses
MPs have put top security chiefs on the spot for alleged negligence over cult activities that have so far claimed over 90 lives in Shakahola village in Kilifi county.
The lawmakers said Inspector-General of Police Japheth Koome, Director of Criminal Investigations Amin Mohamed and National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director-General Major General Philip Camera should explain to Kenyans how the crimes- believed to have gone on for quite some time-were left undetected for long.
8 bodies of children were on Wednesday 26 April exhumed in cult leader Paul Mackenzie’s homestead raising the total death toll of the Shakahola massacre to 98.
Murathe: Why I’ve not been active in Azimio protests
Former Jubilee Vice Chairperson David Murathe now says the alleged linkage of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to the anti-government protests prompted him to stay clear of the demonstrations.
“These people were looking for an excuse to link Uhuru to the maandamano. You see Murathe, you see Uhuru. So some of us have deliberately tried not to be out there, although we are firmly in Azimio,” Murathe said during an exclusive interview on NTV, Murathe on Wednesday.
He however noted that he will be in the scheduled protest on May 2.
” I will be in the maandamano, and I will be in the airport to receive Raila Odinga,” he said.
Wealthy Kenyans stash near KES 1 trillion in dollar accounts
Wealthy Kenyans and businesses’ stockpile of dollars nearly touched a trillion in February amidst a biting shortage that has disrupted purchases of critical raw materials from the global market.
Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) data show that foreign currency bank deposits hit a historic high of KES 987.7 billion, just KES 13 billion shy of the trillion-mark as individuals and big companies sought a safe haven for their wealth.
The KES 66 billion increase in dollar deposits in January and February was equivalent to daily savings of KES 1 billion daily in the period.
Court to rule on Solai dam tragedy
A ruling on whether Perry Mansukh and other accused persons in the Solai dam tragedy have a case to answer is set for today in a Naivasha court.
Solai farm owner Perry Mansukh and eight others have been charged with 48 counts of manslaughter and failing to prepare an environmental impact assessment report. Also charged are the farm’s General Manager Vinoj Jaya Kumar, Nakuru County Water Director Johnson Kamau Njuguna, Water Resources Authority and National Environment Management Authority officers Luka Kipyegen, Winnie Muthoni, Jacinta Were, Tomkin Odo Odhiambo, Willie Omondi and Lynette Cheruiyot.
The private dam burst its banks on the night of May 8, washing away the surrounding villages of Energy, Nyakinyua, Endao, Milmet and Arutani.
Besides the deaths, the tragedy left at least 5,000 people homeless.
The case has been in court since 2018.
Man City beat Arsenal 4-1 in Wednesday game
Manchester City thrashed Arsenal 4-1 on Wednesday to close in on becoming English champions for the fifth time in six years.
The Gunners have only lost four games all season but tellingly two of them have come when faced with the ultimate test in City.
A brittle Arsenal defence, shorn of the reassuring presence of William Saliba, could not contain the power of Erling Haaland, even if it did take until the final attack of the game for the Norwegian to score his 49th goal of the season.
Haaland instead turned provider, twice, for Kevin De Bruyne to fire home early in each half.
