Pokot MPs protest exclusion of the community in latest appointments

A section of Members of Parliament from the Pokot community has protested over the exclusion of the  Community in the Kenya Kwanza first phase of government appointments faulting the Public Service Commission for the mess.

Speaking on Friday during a prayer day for candidates at Tartar Girls high school, the leaders expressed dissatisfaction over the recent appointments saying the Pokot community has been sidelined in the new appointments.

Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong and his  Kapenguria counterpart  Samuel Moroto said that they supported President William Ruto during the August general elections hence the community needs to benefit from the appointments.

“We were surprised to see those shortlisted for the Principal Secretaries because all those who had applied for the position were left out. Only PS Micah Powon is on the list. More than 20 people applied. We had a lot of hopes and we wondered what happened,” he said.

He questioned the decision by the new government to leave out people from the Pokot community.

“West Pokot is a UDA zone, and our people are giving us pressure. All our neighbors of Trans-Nzoia, Baringo, Turkana, and Elgeyo Marakwet have more than five people shortlisted. We missed the cabinet secretary appointments but we didn’t complain thinking that our people could be given the PS position,” he said.

Lochakapong said that they will look for the concerned people and ask them questions.

“Who played us? Who interfered with the application system? We shall meet the President and his Deputy so that they can confirm to us. We know it is a public Service commission and we believe that each county should be inclusive,” he said.

The selection process for the Principal Secretary positions only included two candidates from the County, according to Lochakapong, which is awful.

“We only had two people and even one is not known. We need to have many people to represent us in government because we have been marginalized for a long period of time,” said Lochakapong.

He said that the community needs its share as other communities have been given a fair share of the cabinet slot.

“The President should not ignore us. We are stakeholders in the United Democratic Alliance and Kenya Kwanza at large. We need to have a lion’s share and be given priority,” he said.

Moroto, however, was optimistic that the President together with his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua will consider the community.

“The President promised to include all communities in his appointments and ensure equal representation in government. We are reminding the head of state not to forget us,” he said.

He called on the new Government to come out clearly over the matter.

“We have a problem with PSC.  Many youths and professionals applied. Let people go for the interview,” he said.
