Cherera 4 were forced to resign, Francis Wanderi reveals

As the dust settles after the 2022 elections, shocking revelations and allegations have emerged, with former Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Francis Wanderi claiming the Cherera Four were forced to resign.

Appearing before the National Dialogue Committee on Thursday, Wanderi revealed that they were forced out of the commission.

“I want to address the removal of the four commissioners generally known as the Cherera Four; I want to admit that were forced to resign. It was not our desire,” stated Wanderi.

The Cherera Four—Juliana Cherera, Francis Wandera, Irene Masit, and Justus Nyang’aya—were IEBC commissioners who disputed the 2022 presidential election results announced by commission’s chair Wafula Chebukati. The other two commissioners, Abdi Yakub Guliye and Boya Molu agreed with the final tally of the election results.

“We never tallied the results; they were tallied by people working with the Chairman. There is a prescribed format for declaring all elected positions, and there is a form to be filled. For the Presidential results, we as commissioners are supposed to fill out form 34C. That was never submitted to us. What we got from the CEO was a three or four-page summary of all counties. As we speak, we have never seen form 34C,” alleged Wanderi.

Cherera and Masit claim they flew out of the country for security reasons.

“It was bad for me and my family; we have been threatened just because we spoke out about what we saw,” Cherera alleged.

“I am out of the country for security reasons; remember I come from Rift Valley, and they would say that I betrayed the community,” Masit accused.

Wanderi also quoted Article 249 of the constitution, which states that the IEBC Commission is independent and must protect the sovereignty of the people, and cited ongoing issues between the Chairman and some commissioners.

“We have had conflicts between Chebukati and Chiloba, Akombe and Chebukati, Chebukati and the four commissioners; there must be something wrong with the person or the position,” Wanderi added.

Cherera said, “As the Vice-Chair, even today, we stand by our word that we disown the presidential election results…I want to submit that these elections be audited, the servers should be opened, and a forensic audit be conducted. After the audit, let’s move on!”

The 2022 elections have been a source of contention between the Azimio and Kenya Kwanza brigades, with opposition leader Raila Odinga calling for the servers to be opened, while President William Ruto argues that the elections are in the past, and the country needs to move on.
