Garissa Cancer Center conducts first radiotherapy treatment
Garissa County has conducted its first radiotherapy treatment since the region’s cancer facility was operationalized this month.
The Center, which was completed in 2021 provided specialist radiotherapy treatment to a patient referred by the Holugho Sub County Health Center.
“It was a historic day for Garissa Health as it provided it’s first patient on radiotherapy treatment. This milestone will reduce mortalities and costs. Special gratitude to Governor Nathif Jama Adam for making it possible,” the Garissa County Health Department wrote on social media.
According to Fatuma Hassan, the facility’s coordinator, receiving sophisticated precision cancer therapy at the Garissa Referal hospital was a historic event.
She stated that the Garissa cancer center is fully operational to handle the increasing number of cancer cases in Garissa County and other areas in Northern Kenya.
Fatuma assured patients that the facility has highly skilled experts, specialized training, and advanced equipment to deliver safe and improved cancer care.
She stated that while chemotherapy services have been provided at the Referral Hospital since 2019, patients were seeking radiotherapy treatments in Nairobi and other countries. She further assured the public that the county government will hold a sensitization exercise to raise awareness about the available services.
Garissa Governor Nadhif Adam, who recently toured the institution, informed members of the public of his commitment to ensuring the center provides high-quality care to cancer patients.
