World Athletics ratifies marathon world record set by Eliud Kipchoge
World Athletics has ratified two world U20 records set by Jamaica’s 4x100m team and 100m sprinter Letsile Tebogo, as well as the marathon world record set by Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge at the Berlin Marathon last year.
Double Olympic champion Kipchoge cut 30 seconds off the previous record he had established in Berlin in 2018 by finishing the marathon in 2:01:09.
Throughout the entire race, the 38-year-old Kenyan kept up a quick pace, reaching the halfway point in 59:50 and crossing the finish line with a lead of more than four minutes.
“I am overjoyed to have broken the world record,” Kipchoge said. “I wanted to run the first half so fast. After 38km I knew I would be capable of breaking the world record. The circumstances were great, and so was the organization.”
In addition to Kipchoge’s record, Botswana’s Tebogo set a new world U20 record in the 100m at the World Athletics U20 Championships Cali 22, with a time of 9.91 seconds.
He had also broken the championship record in his heat and semifinals.
Three days after Tebogo’s record, Jamaica’s 4x100m team set a new world U20 record at the same event, with a time of 42.59 seconds. The team consisted of Serena Cole, Tina Clayton, Kerrica Hill and Tia Clayton.
