World 800M champion Mary Moraa together with other athletes who train at Oloolua forest have started an initiative to plant one million trees in the forest. Speaking during the National tree planting exercise, the athletes commited to revamp the forest that is mostly used by athletes who have set their training base in the area.
At the same time Kabras Sugar RFC players joined other Kenyans in tree planting exercise in support of the national government’s tree planting initiative. At least 5, 000 tree seedlings were planted in Senyende within Kakamega Forest and in Kiminini at Chalicha yesterday, with support from the Rai Group.
West Kenya Sugar Company Chairman Jaswant Rai said there was need for only Kenya’s tropical rainforest; Kakamega forest to be protected against destruction.
“Tree planting should not stop after today (Monday) we have to carry on with the exercise. The tree we are planting now are meant to safeguard our future generation as a country,” said Rai.
In this mega ambition to plant 15 billion trees, the government plans to include all and sundry and bank on the population for the success in the planting and growing excercise. Another instance is the State plans to use students in schools and colleges, as well as workers in the education sector, to plant millions of trees to help meet its target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 to help mitigate climate change.
