Govt launches Talanta Hela project to monetize sports and creative talents
The Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Arts, and Sports has today, February 15, launched the Talanta Hela project, a flagship plan to monetize talents in sports and the creative industry.
The project is in line with the government’s bottom-up economic transformation agenda and aims to identify, recruit, nurture, market, and monetize talent.
“We have to reflect on how we have performed as a country over the years and ask ourselves why Nigerian music is the most popular music we listen to. Why are Kenyan-themed films shot in South Africa? The sense of this initiative is to burn the box. That is why we don’t want to think outside the box. We don’t even want the box. We need fresh thinking,” said CS Ababu Namwamba during the launch.
The project is also set to work with the education system to identify schools that will act as academies and nurture certain sports.
“Sources of talent are in our schools. We in the school and education system want to continue to be the source of talent. We are working with the Ministry of Sports so that we can identify schools that will act like academies and nurture certain sports,” said Belio Kipsang PS Education.
As part of the implementation of the project, the Kenya Academy of Sports will be renamed the Kenya Academy of Sports and Arts to accommodate the creative industry.
The initiative will begin with football this year, with other sports to follow in subsequent years.
Sports PS Jonathan Mueke, “The government is partnering with the private sector for sponsorship and branding. The federations will be at the center of this, with the government fitting into their programs. Our key strength is a collaboration with all sectors.”
Namwamba unveiled the newly appointed Talanta Hela Council and Sports Technical Committee including veteran sports journalist Carol Radull, World javelin medallist Julius Yego, former football internationals Boniface Ambani and Sammy Shollei among others.
The Technical Committee has a daunting task in reforming the sporting sector in the country.
The Draft 2023 Budget Policy Statement released on January 18 disclosed the government’s arrangement to launch a bottom-up football tournament contested by under-19 teams from all 47 counties, with the national government working with county governments to invest heavily in youth football.
