President William Ruto has told off Azimio leader Raila Odinga over his critique of US Ambassador Meg Whitman labelling her as rogue
The President said Ambassador Whitman’s statement that Kenya’s elections were free and fair, is a matter if facts.
“Let us learn to respect ourselves before we demand to be respected,” Ruto said.
“I found myself wondering, between those orchestrating demonstrations and causing property damage, and the ambassador who made the statement, who truly holds the label of ‘rogue’? I leave this question for Kenyans to contemplate.”
He spoke on Friday during the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) 2jiajiri Graduation event held in Kasarani.
Ambassador Whitman, in her address at the opening of the Devolution Conference on Wednesday, opined that the 2022 polls solidified Kenya’s standing as the most democratic nation on the continent.
However, these comments elicited a sharp response from Opposition leader Raila Odinga, who criticised Ambassador Whitman for what he perceived as unwarranted interference in Kenya’s internal matters.
“I want to address the so-called ‘rogue’ ambassador: let Kenyans be. If protests (‘maandamano’) can lead to a dialogue between Ichung’wah and Kalonzo, then we find no fault with them,” Raila said during the same event.
Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Alfred Mutua, also joined in defense of the US Ambassador, affirming that only the Government of Kenya holds the authority to initiate the recall of a foreign envoy, not Raila.
