Tuju, Salat met ‘Cherera Four’ at Yaya Apartments, manager says
New information has come to light in the hearings against suspended Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Irene Massit and three former commissioners, known as the “Cherera Four,” who are being investigated for their behavior after disputing the presidential election results declared by IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati in August.
Former Vice Chair Juliana Cherera, as well as ex-commissioners Justus Nyang’aya and Francis Wanderi, are accused of meeting with high-profile Azimio operatives at Yaya Apartments in Kilimani between August 15 and 17.
During Thursday’s hearings, led by Justice Aggrey Muchelule, the accommodations manager at Yaya apartments, Simon Miller, confirmed that the four commissioners were booked into the premises on those dates and stayed in rooms 21, 23, and 27 with their security detail.
He added that on the day the commissioners checked in, they were visited by prominent leaders allied with the Azimio la Umoja coalition, including Executive Director Raphael Tuju and Kanu Secretary General Nick Salat, according to the visitor’s logs.
CCTV footage also showed Massit entering a lift from the basement with the hotel’s chief of security.
Miller stated that the commissioners checked in on the evening of August 15 and checked out on the afternoon of August 19, and did not provide their personal documents or personally sign the log books upon arrival.
“The commissioners did not sign the booking but their security details are the ones who signed. We had asked two of them to sign the documents on behalf of the rest and did not want to spend much time at the reception. Two payments were done via M-Pesa and one in cash by Edwin Ogwe,” Miller said.
Miller noted that several hotel employees who may have seen the commissioners during their three-day stay are no longer working at the premises.
