Shock as body of unidentified man found in Kathita river near Meru Town
The body of an unidentified man aged between 40 and 45 years old has been retrieved from Kathita River bridge this morning.
The body was spotted by passers-by floating in a heavily flowing river near Meru town. Later, residents called police officers from Imenti North police station accompanied by DCI officers and firefighters from the Meru County Department to retrieve the body.
According to Imenti North deputy police commander, Ezekiel Chepkwony, the body had been in the water for several days and had started rotting, but had no physical injuries.
The police suspected the man died as a result of drowning, especially with the heavy rainfall that continues to hit the ground in many parts of the country.
They said they have launched investigations to determine the cause of his death.
Residents say that the street between Meru and Gitimbine has been a threat to their security, as the streetlights have not been working.
“We want the Kenya National Highway Authority to expand this footbridge for easy walking even at night,” said Paul Kimathi, a resident.
Imenti North MP Rahim Dawood urged residents to be extra careful during the heavy rain season, avoid walking along heavily flowing river banks, and avoid walking at night while drunk.
The body of the deceased has been taken to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, awaiting postmortem.
