Senator Muhia calls on parliament to study Supreme Court election ruling, implement recommendations
Nyandarua County Senator John Muhia Methu has called on the Standing Committee on Justice Legal Affairs and Human Rights to study Supreme Court ruling and introduce legislation that will seal loopholes in the electoral process.
He is urging the committee to evaluate the manner of appointment of future IEBC Commissioners and enhance the statutory and regulatory framework on the separate policy and administrative remit of IEBC.
In a notice of motion seen by NTV, the Senator has condemned the actions of the four dissenting commissioners saying “Their actions were expressions of impunity and a concerted effort to subvert the sovereign will of the people through the sabotage of the constitutional mandates of the Commission.”
The four, Juliana Whonge Cherera, Irene Massit, Justus Nyang’aya, and Francis Wanderi denounced the verification and tallying processes conducted by the Chairman of the IEBC terming the process as opaque.
Speaking exclusively to NTV, Muhia said there is a need for the four commissioners to take responsibility for actions that could have taken the country through a dangerous path.
“Kenya as a country is not a table tennis court. You must take responsibility for your actions,” he said.
Muhia further calls upon the IEBC to affect the legal, policy, and institutional reforms recommended by the Supreme Court in their judgement that unanimously dismissed petitions challenging the election of Ruto as the country’s fifth president.
According to Muhia, he expects the Senate to censure the four commissioners and is calling upon the opposition in the lower house of parliament to support the motion.
“I think it is a straightforward matter. We unanimously agree that the actions of the four were not ideal. I am hopeful that the opposition supports the motion as well.”
