Security operations beefed up in Turkana, more weapons recovered
Security operations in Turkana East have been beefed up, patrol intensified in a move to restore peace in the warring region.
In a statement on Monday evening, the National Police Service said more weapons were discovered during ongoing patrols.
“The ‘Operation Komesha Uhalifu in North Rift’ conducted by a multi-agency security team continues to register great success in Baringo and Turkana Counties,” the NPS said.
“Earlier in the day, the team managed to recover rifles and several rounds of ammunition.”
The intensified patrols come in the wake of the recent banditry attack in Turkana East Sub-County. Additional troops with specialized equipment have been deployed to ensure that all firearms in the hands of bandits are mopped up, and normalcy returns to the area.
“As the NPS, we thank the members of the public for their continued cooperation and support and request that they continue sharing timely information to make the operation a success,” police spokesman Bruno Isohi Shioso said.
Nine police officers are among 11 people who were killed by armed gunmen in a cattle-rustling incident in Turkana East, Turkana County on September 26.
The other victims included a chief and two villagers.
Shioso said the victims were pursuing a heavily armed gang that had raided a village and made away with an unknown number of animals when they were ambushed.
