Ruto to Azimio: Sponsored demonstrations won’t exempt you from taxes
President William Ruto on Monday delivered a warning to the Azimio la Umoja party declaring that no one will be exempted from paying taxes as a result of the demonstrations that the party organised the past week.
President Ruto reiterated that the goal is to ensure everyone pays their fair contribution toward the nation’s growth.
The head of state accused unnamed individuals of sponsoring the Azimio rallies in Kamukunji and Jacaranda grounds last week in an effort to put pressure on him so they could be exempted from heavy taxes.
He emphasized that it is wrong for certain citizens to forego paying taxes while others are responsible for doing so.
“The good people who are used to exempting themselves from paying tax. Their day is up, every citizen must lay the tax. Even if they sponsor demonstrations so that they don’t pay tax, I want to assure them, they must pay tax,” Ruto said.
“This country is not an animal farm where some are more equal than others. We are going to have a country where every citizen carries a fair share of our burden,” he added.
A section of UDA senators accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of sponsoring the rallies saying there was a law preventing the Kenyatta and Moi families from paying tax.
On Sunday, Azimio leader Raila Odinga likened the current government to the biblical tax collector Zacchaeus, known for his unethical and exploitative practices.
During the rally, Odinga urged Kenyans to resist paying taxes, claiming that they were “punitive” and unjust.
“We ask that all Kenyans demand the removal of these punitive taxes,” Odinga said.
“There will be no taxation without representation,” he added, emphasizing his belief that the government was not truly representing the people’s interests.
By June 2027, Ruto has set a new goal of collecting KES 4.8 trillion in tax income, which entails an extra KES 1.1 trillion in tax implications on top of KES 3.77 trillion in earlier predictions from the National Treasury.
The president has also taken dramatic action and has recommended against tax waiver petitions, claiming that the government “stopped” granting waivers.
