Ruto says 20,000 people will be recruited for public service internship from 2024
President William Ruto on Friday launched the Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) aimed at providing practical skills to graduates seeking employment.
He said 20,000 interns will be recruited to the programme to help to bridge the skills gap between graduates and employers, making them more employable.
The President has also commissioned the 2021/2022 report on the Status of Compliance with the Values and Principles in Articles 10 and 232 of the Constitution, acknowledging the Public Service Emerging Leaders Fellowship Programme (PSELFP).
In his speech, the President said that the government is committed to delivering its pledges to the people of Kenya as set out in the Plan for the Bottom-Up Economic Transformational Agenda of Kenya.
A responsive, responsible, and accountable public service is, therefore, imperative to deliver on the transformational agenda.
Ruto added that the programme will offer graduates the opportunity to acquire practical skills and on-the-job experience in the public sector.
This will enhance their chances of securing employment in the private and public sectors.
“We must begin by transforming our Public Service to make it more responsive to the needs of the citizens. We are counting on you to help us deliver the transformation required to overcome these challenges,” said President Ruto.
He also emphasized the importance of a sound public service that is apolitical, impersonal, scrupulous, impartial, fair, consistent, predictable, and coherent.
The PSIP is expected to enhance the quality of public service by providing interns with the requisite skills to serve the citizens effectively.
The President further revealed that the government has embarked on formulating appropriate policy and strategic frameworks that will anchor the implementation of food security and agro-industrial production, affordable housing, universal health coverage, micro, small and medium enterprises as well as digital economy agendas. He added that a fit-for-purpose public service is imperative to deliver on these agendas.
The PSIP will be administered by the Public Service Commission (PSC), which will provide standardised tools for measuring service delivery across the public service. The government will also seek to entrench a renewed public service performance culture and promote innovation.
