Ruto calls on Kenya Red Cross to take on climate change sensitisation
President William Ruto has appealed to the Kenya Red Cross Society to incorporate climate change in its scope of activities.
The President said Kenya is in the grip of the worst drought in 40 years, and “a lot of work has to be done in mitigating its effects”.
The unprecedented wave of challenges, the President explained, calls for effective and transformative collaboration.
“Go further and join us in sensitising our communities about climate change and ways of building resilience,” he said.
He spoke on Tuesday when he was installed as the patron of the Kenya Red Cross Society at State House, Nairobi.
He urged the Society to use its capacity to mobilise communities to complement the government’s tree-planting programme.
The President announced that the Govt had made available an extra KES 2 billion, in addition to KES 3.2 billion given earlier, to tackle famine in the country.
Government data shows at least 3.5 million Kenyans are in dire need of food due to drought.
Meanwhile, the world will converge between November 6 and 18 for the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022, COP27, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
Several people including media personnel will attend the 27th conference which is expected to bring together experts with a clearer understanding of the climate crisis.
