Row over prime Loresho property turns sour as goons ‘detain’ Lands CS
Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome found herself in unfamiliar territory on Tuesday after being temporarily detained by thugs on a disputed piece of land she had gone to settle.
The CS, who was ironically in the company of police officers from Gigiri Police Division and Spring Valley Police Station, had to wait for the padlock she was being held under to be broken.
She was on a mission to hand over the disputed land to businessman Ashok Ruphsi Shah and his partner Hitenkumar Raja from the thugs.
The duo is embroiled in a land ownership dispute with former PC Davis Nathan Chelogoi over a piece of land with reference number 18485 IR number 64011 along the Lower Kabete road.
The thugs, who have been occupying the land and were present during the CS’s visit, sneaked up to the gate, padlocked it and disappeared into the bush.
“Normally I am not easily threatened or frightened, my nature is that I am a courageous person, but I don’t like the fact that thugs, when I am in the company of the area DCC, when I am in the company of the OCPD, the office of the DCI, that thugs lock a gate that we have accessed to come here, telling you that the owner will not be able to access this place, his fears are valid and in fact he has been persistently pressuring me to come and help him take over his land.
On the other side of the gate, Mr Ashok Rupshi Shah, who according to the land records is the bonafide owner of the land, and his lawyer Suleiman Bashir were locked outside and could not access the same piece of land.
“Now I understand the challenge he (Mr Ashok) is facing, we will not tolerate impunity because what is happening here is pure impunity, I am being held by the same goons who have taken over this land from someone who has been charged,” CS Wahome added.
For the next 20 minutes or so, until the padlock was broken, the CS and her entourage could not leave the compound and were at the mercy of the unseen goons.
The land has been the subject of a row pitting Ashok and his partner Hitenkumar Amritlal Raja on one side and former Moi-era powerful Provincial Commissioner Davis Nathan Chelogoi on the other, with the CS now denying ownership to the latter, who she says is in conflict with the law, having been charged with several counts including conspiracy to defraud, forcible detainer, forgery, uttering a forged document and obtaining/procuring registration of land by false pretence. He has never entered a plea.
