Return of democracy, government subsidies: Azimio Kamukunji resolutions

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition’s first ‘consultative meeting’ at Kamukunji grounds on Wednesday called for among other things the restoration of subsidies on fuel, maize flour, and electricity.

The meeting brought together opposition leaders, Raila Odinga, Martha Karua, and Kalonzo Mosyoka among other leaders.

From the meeting, 10 resolutions were made and read by National Assembly minority leader Opiyo Wandayi.

Overall, the opposition leaders pointed out the alleged grim state of democracy in the country.

According to aRaila Odinga’s allies, Kenya under the leadership of President William Ruto is falling back from democratic gains made since 2002.

We are witnessing the most uncaring, unchallengeable, and cold-hearted regime in the history of the country. We are witnessing a lack of empathy and coldness that are at odds with time. We are therefore asking for the regime to be put under scrutiny to return to the people’s agenda,” said the resolutions.

Among the key agreements in the meeting was a call for the government to embrace rule of law and embark on an inclusive and consultative process to constitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC. The political class urged the remaining two of the infamous Cherera four to remain in office.

Furthermore, the Kamukunji meeting was dominated by calls on the rising cost of living and called on the President to reinstate the subsidy on maize floor, fuel, and electricity beginning January next year.

“The Ruto regime must restore school fees subsidy that saw the ministry of education reduce school fees in all secondary schools and special needs schools,” said Wandayi.

Adding that, “Ruto must understand that while his fortunes have changed for the better, for a majority of parents if not all the economic situation has remained the same if not worse.”

They also called on the government to immediately restore subsidies in social safety in the form of cash transfers to the elderly inform of the ‘Pesa ya Wazee and Linda Mama programs.

Azimio’s rally urged the Kenya Kwanza regime to install disciple among its ranks for Kenyans to have clarity on critical policy issues failure to which Kenyans will ignore all roadside declarations.

The meeting resolved to reinstitute the KES 10 billion Kazi Mtaani project, which was disbanded by President Ruto.

Dialogues to continue in the coming days, weeks, and months. The next meeting is a parallel Jamhuri Day celebration on December 12.
