Kisii, Mombasa residents light candles, hold prayers in memory of lives lost during anti-government protests
Residents of Kisii and Mombasa on Wednesday July 26, lit candles and held prayers in remembrance of the lives lost during the anti-government protests.
This follows Azimio’s suspension of the demonstrations announced on Monday July 24.
“We have come to light candles in remembrance of people who died due to police shots during the anti-government protests. We would also like to remind the police that we do not have any problem with them but are only exercising our constitutional right,” one of the Kisii residents said.

In a statement issued by the Azimio Coalition on July 25, citizens from different parts of the country are urged to light candles and lay down flowers at various convergence points, including parks, hospitals, bus stops, and churches, to express their love and respect for the victims of the anti-government protests.
In another statement dated July 24, the Azimio League stated that “The country is currently facing an unprecedented phenomenon of police brutality, and the State is resorting to armed militia to quell the protests.”
The Kenya National Human Rights Commission also condemned acts of police brutality that led to the loss of lives during the anti-government protests, a claim that the Ministry of Interior Security continues to refute.
On Tuesday, July 25, Interior and National Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced that one law enforcer was killed and 305 others were injured during the Azimio protests.
