Religious leaders from Igembe call for urgent action to address insecurity in the region
The church has now added its voice to the growing runway insecurity in the volatile Mutuati and Tigania region that borders the counties of Isiolo and Samburu. Led by Bishop Gitari, the Chairman of Igembe Pastors Network, they are ready to work closely with all the communities to have a long-lasting peace because this issue has caused a lot of pain to them.
They requested the government that since it has the state machinery on the ground at its disposal, it should now move with speed and ensure that stern action is taken against the culprits. Adding that, the time had come for all the suspects behind the banditry to be arrested and prosecuted.
“As a church we have stood to pray and preach to the bandits in Samburu and Turkana areas to know stealing and killing is bad, there was a time we talked to them and things stopped for a while, but now they are back again,” said bishop Gitari.
They said to have welcomed all religious leaders to join the county leadership in preaching peace along the Igembe region even as they sought other interventions. They said the frequent attacks by bandits have not only left them in poverty but also affected them mentally.
Pastors however blamed the government and leaders for the attacks saying if security officers could have acted fast the ongoing attacks could not have occurred. Even the promise made by Interior CS Kindiki a few weeks ago has not yet been fulfilled saying it’s a contributing factor to the deteriorating state of insecurity in the area. They urged security officers and elected leaders to meet with Samburu and other communities to engage in a dialogue so that they can find a lasting solution.
They appealed to all leaders to come together and speak a common voice that would unite the warring communities. They were speaking in Igembe Central during regional peace prayers that brought together religious leaders from different churches across the region. The latest attack left five dead and scores injured on Monday night last week while pursuing stolen cattle.
