CS Kindiki: Govt to deploy special forces and elite units to Northern Kenya, Upper Coast

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has announced the government’s intention to deploy special forces and elite units to pursue and neutralise armed criminals who are terrorising innocent people in Northern Kenya and the Upper Coast region, including Tana River and Lamu counties.

Speaking to a security baraza at Wayu, Galledyertu Sub-County, Tana River County, CS Kindiki has vowed to honour the memory of fallen officers and take decisive action against those inciting violence amid the Tana River clashes.

“We salute and pay homage to our multi-agency security officers who have fallen in the line of duty, defending our nation and its people from criminals…Any leader inciting violence and destruction of property will be apprehended and prosecuted, their political affiliation notwithstanding,” CS Kindiki said.

In the same breath, CS Kindiki urged communities living in border areas to coexist peacefully and to allow the relevant governmental and judicial institutions to arbitrate any cross-border disputes.

CS Kindiki also declared that Galledyertu is now a fully-fledged and operational sub-county and that the government will appoint a contractor to build the sub-county headquarters.

Tana River Governor Godhana Dhadho, Senator Danson Mungatana, MPs, MCAs, and Coast Regional, Tana River County, and Galledyertu Sub-County Security and Intelligence Committees were in attendance.

On September 18, at least 12 people were reported dead, and hundreds of families were displaced following a fresh border row along the Kitui and Tana River border.

The clashes also led to the destruction of properties, including a police station and a primary school, within the conflict zone, as feuding communities left the area for fear of more attacks.

The demonstrations mounted in the Kone-Kaliti area within the Waldena location in Tana River County echo the escalating feud between communities living in Kalalani, along the boundary of Kitui and Tana River counties.
