Increasing NSSF Contributions
Court of Appeal makes a ruling paving the way for the increase of NSSF contributions from the current KES 400 to a maximum of KES 2,160.
After seven years of a tussle in the corridors of justice, the contentious section 20 of the NSSF Act of 2013 has been given a green light by the Court of Appeal. This means that going forward, the 240 billion shillings strong National Social Security Fund can now revise member contributions from the prevailing KES 200 per employee per month matched by another KES 200 by the employer, to 6.0 per cent of one’s pensionable income.
This amount will now be capped at KES 2,160 as provided by the Act. This development is a big win for the Kenya Kwanza government which is banking on ramped-up NSSF collections to help finance the affordable housing agenda.

Protesters in DR Congo’s Goma denounce East African military force
Thousands of people demonstrated Monday in Goma, the commercial hub in eastern DR Congo, to protest the perceived inaction of an East African military force against the M23 rebel insurgency, according to an AFP reporter in the city.
The M23, a Tutsi-led group, has captured large swathes of territory in the North Kivu province, recently coming to within a few miles of Goma and its one million residents.
To aid the Democratic Republic of Congo’s authorities, leaders of the seven-nation East African Community (EAC) approved the deployment of a military force to combat the rebels, with the first troops arriving in Goma last November.
