LSK gives DPP three days to explain the dropping of graft cases
The Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri has given the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji a three-day ultimatum to explain to Kenyans reasons for dropping charges against graft suspects allied to President William Ruto.
Theuri said failure to provide substantive explanations, LSK would institute private prosecution against the suspects.
“The society asks the DPP to publicly reveal the reasons for the discontinuation of the cases if the public [members] are to restore confidence in the office of the DPP. We similarly call on the Judiciary, especially the magistrates handling the cases, to ask the DPP to provide a justification before allowing the discontinuation of the charges,” he said.
This week DPP applied to withdraw the embezzlement charges of KSh. 19 million against Gender CS nominee Aisha Jumwa, former Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chumo, and 10 others over allegations of KSh. 400 million transformers scandal and former Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal, who was facing KSh. 80 million corruption cases.
President Ruto realigns government
In his first official move, President William Ruto reorganized the government yesterday by bringing economic policy and budget policy under his purview at State House to reflect his goals for the ensuing five years.
In an Executive Order, Ruto the Office of Fiscal Affairs and Budget Policy, Office of Economic Transformation, and the Council of Economic Advisers.
Fiscal Affairs and Budget Policy office will act akin to the President’s Budget Office under the Uhuru Kenyatta administration to help craft finances and policies in line with the Head of State’s agenda, while the office of the economic transformation and the council of economic advisers will be tasked with predictive and advisory analysis of the economy, ways of raising revenue, as well as policies to help extend the cheapest credit to the most number of people to steer growth.
Dr. Ruto also reorganized the office of the head of the public service by integrating it with the office of the chief of staff, just as President Kenyatta had done during his first term before he divided the two positions.
Transport worker’s strike in South Africa costs miners $40 million a day
According to a trade group, the continuing strike at state-owned transportation company Transnet is costing South African miners $44 million each day in lost export income.
Workers at Transnet’s freight rail and ports previously stated that they had turned down a revised pay offer and pledged to keep up their protest, which had been going on for a week.
Major mineral export harbors are currently functioning at between 12% and 30% of their daily norms owing to the strike, according to the Minerals Council of South Africa. A request for comment on the projections received no immediate response from Transnet.
The workers are demanding an increase that would be related to South Africa’s annual inflation rate, which was 7.6% in August, but Transit on Thursday tabled an offer to raise wages to 4.5% from 3-4% previously, with additional 5.3% annual increases over the next two years.
Musk under investigation over Twitter bid
Federal authorities are looking into Elon Musk’s actions related to his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter Inc., the social media company revealed in a court document.
While the document stated that he was the subject of inquiries, it made no mention of the precise nature of the inquiries or the federal agencies carrying them out.
Twitter, which sued Musk in July to pressure him to finalize the deal, claimed Musk’s lawyers had invoked “investigative privilege” when refusing to provide the information it had requested.

McTominay rescues Manchester United
In the Europa League, Scott McTominay’s winner over Omonia Nicosia kept Manchester United’s prospects of winning their group alive, and manager Erik ten Hag lauded the team’s enthusiasm and belief in themselves.
When McTominay came in with fewer than ten minutes left to play, Jadon Sancho set him up in the area for the game-winning goal.
As a result, United is now three points behind Real Sociedad, who defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 to earn their fourth victory in as many games. Real Sociedad is the group’s leader.
Arsenal took a big step towards qualifying for the Europa League knockout stage with a slender 1-0 win at Bodo/Glimt.
Bukayo Saka scored the sole goal to end Bodo/Glimt 14-game winning streak at home in Europe.
Jarrod Bowen equalled the Hammers’ all-time European goalscoring record in the 2-1 win over Anderlecht.
His latest strike took him to level with club greats Johnny Byrne and David Cross on six European goals as West Ham guaranteed qualification for the knockout stage of the Europa Conference League with two games to spare.
