Press Review; Days top stories

Hello, today is Thursday, January 12, 2023.

Here is what is making headlines.

Betting firms to pay taxes daily

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has completed a pilot that saw it interlink its tax system with the betting sector in order to track the 15 per cent tax on betting, gaming, and lottery, as well as the 20 per cent withholding tax on winnings collected from punters every day.

This move is part of the government’s effort to increase tax compliance, as it aims to get a bigger slice of the billions made from the gambling industry.

Speaking at a public hearing on the Financial Year 2023/24 budget, Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo said, “KRA had made these improvements on tax administration for optimal collection.”

He added that the improvements include the “integration of KRA system with the Betting Sector.”

Two challenge decision to end NHIF cover for police and prison officers

Two activists, Chrispine Onyango and Henry Shitanda, have taken legal action against the decision to award a consortium of health providers led by CIC General Limited Insurance a KES 8.7 billion tender to provide medical cover for the National Police Service and Kenya Prisons Service.

The activists have requested that the High Court stop the Treasury from releasing any funds to the consortium of insurance companies.

The activists have argued that the tender is illegal, as government employees should be insured by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

They claim that the move to award the tender is aimed at profiteering for a few individuals and firms.

Justice Hedwig Ongudi has declined to issue an order stopping the payment to the insurance companies. Instead, the court has ordered the petitioners to serve the respondents within three days and appear for mention on January 17, 2023, for further directions.

Chiloba choked to death

The death of LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba has been ruled as death by asphyxiation by government pathologist Johansen Oduor.

Speaking to the press at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, Oduor said Chiloba had coverings on his nose and mouth leading to suffocation.

“From our findings, the late Edwin died out of asphyxia which is caused by smothering,” said Oduor. “He had a piece of trouser tied around the nose and mouth. He had socks stuffed in his mouth. He had Cyanosis, when you look at his fingernails, they were bluish in colour which shows that he lacked oxygen when he died,”.

Oduor added that they could not find any other injuries and said they took more samples to ascertain whether he was possibly drugged before he was murdered.

The police said they would detain the five suspects for a further 21 days to further their investigation.

Life sentence for man who married 9-year-old

A 50-year-old man in Narok was sentenced to life in prison for defiling and marrying a 9-year-old girl in 2019.

Saigulu Ololosereka appeared before Narok senior resident magistrate Phyllis Shinyanda on Wednesday, who issued the sentence after he pleaded guilty to the two counts of defiling and marrying the child.

The court heard that Ololosereka showed no remorse for his actions and that the girl had undergone female genital mutilation and a caesarian section as a result of the marriage.

“The last three years must have been the most horrific years for the victim,” Shinyanda said in her judgment.

Ololosereka has a right to appeal the sentence within 14 days.

Uganda declares end to four-month Ebola outbreak

On Wednesday, Uganda’s Health Minister, Jane Ruth Aceng, declared the end of the country’s nearly four-month Ebola outbreak.

Despite the absence of a proven vaccine against the viral strain, Uganda was able to swiftly bring the outbreak under control.

“We have successfully controlled the spread of Ebola in Uganda,” said Aceng during a ceremony marking the end of the outbreak.

This is Uganda’s eighth Ebola outbreak since 2000, and the latest one killed 55 out of 143 people infected since September. Six of the fatalities were health workers.

Wednesday’s declaration followed Uganda’s completion of 42 days with no active cases, which represents two full incubation periods of the virus.

Aceng said “Uganda has been able to curb the spread of the disease and prevent it from spreading to the neighboring countries. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our healthcare workers.”

Wazito register first win

Former champions Mathare United were held to a 1-1 draw against Posta Rangers in a rescheduled Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) match at Moi International Sports Center Kasarani Annex on Wednesday.

The draw took Posta’s points tally to 12, but they still sit seventh from eight games.

In another match of the day, Wazito picked up their first win of the season after beating Vihiga Bullets 3-1 at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

Goals from Abubakar Eneji, Hillary Otieno, and Cliff Oruko gave Wazito the win, while striker Vincent Ogola scored a consolation goal for Bullets, taking his tally this season to four goals.

The win against Bullets pushed Wazito to 14th on the log with four points.

Osaka announces pregnancy

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has announced she is pregnant and will not be returning to the court until 2024.

The 25-year-old former world number one withdrew from the Australian Open earlier this week and had not played since September.

“2023 will be a year that’ll be full for lessons for me,” said Osaka. “One thing I am looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mom’.”

Osaka won her last Grand Slam at the Australian Open in 2021, but has spoken of the difficulties she has faced since that memorable title win.

In May 2021, after pulling out of the French Open, Osaka revealed that she had “suffered long bouts of depression” ever since winning her first major title, the US Open, in 2018.
