President Ruto to jet off today for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral and US
President William Ruto is set to leave the country today, September 18, for his official visit to the United Kingdom and the United States of America barely a week after he was sworn into office as President.
The President will first proceed to the United Kingdom where he will attend the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II scheduled for Monday, September 19.
The Head of State is expected to be hosted for a dinner by King Charles III upon arrival in the United Kingdom. He will be among 500 foreign dignitaries who will attend the State Funeral.
Kenya is among 36 other nations of the Commonwealth for whom Queen Elizabeth II served as a symbolic figurehead. The Queen who ruled for 70 years has deep ties to Kenya.
After the funeral, the President will leave for the United States of America where he will attend the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The UNGA meeting will be the first to be held in person since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic that discouraged physical interactions. The UNGA meetings in 202o and 2021 were held virtually.
President Ruto is expected to meet President Joe Biden and officials from the American chamber of commerce.
Kenya’s trade with the US totaled $1.1 billion in two-way goods trade during 2019. Goods expoted totaled $667 million while goods imported totaled $667 million.
His predecessor made five trips to the US, the last visit being in October 2021 meeting President Joe Biden.
