Pain for Nairobi motorists as Kenha to close section of Uhuru Highway for a month

Motorists who use Nairobi’s Uhuru Highway should prepare to spend long hours in traffic after the Kenya Highway Authority (Kenha) announced on Monday that a section of the road will be closed for a month.

According to Kenha, the closure begins on January 16 and lasts until February 20, 2025, to facilitate the construction of a pedestrian underpass at the Haile Selassie roundabout.

“This traffic disruption is due to scheduled road works for construction of a pedestrian underpass at the section which will commence from Thursday, January 16, 2025, to Thursday, February 20, 2025,” Kenha said.

Kenha added that the disruption is necessary for the ongoing roadworks aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety at the location.

The roads agency has urged motorists to comply with traffic management plans and follow the directions of traffic marshals as well as road signs.

Police officers and traffic marshals will be stationed on-site to assist with traffic flow.

The Greenpark Terminus Pedestrian Underpass Network along the Uhuru Highway-Haile Selassie intersection roundabout in Nairobi is being built at a cost of Sh2 billion.

The project received the green light after the government set aside funds under the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) for the construction.

Once completed, the underpass will see pedestrians connect between Nairobi CBD and Green Park Terminus and will also serve hundreds of Nairobi residents who commute to Upper Hill and other adjacent areas.

The project, whose construction works are being undertaken by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (Kenya), commenced on March 13, 2024 and is expected to be complete by March 13, 2025.

Both underpass 1 across Haile Selassie Avenue and underpass 2 across Uhuru Highway on Mombasa Bound are 106 meters; underpass 3 across Haile Selassie Avenue on the Upperhill side is 29.6 meters, while underpass 4 across Uhuru Highway on the Westlands Bound side is 40.4 meters, respectively.

The announcement comes at the back of numerous ongoing road construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects currently ongoing within the capital.

On Sunday, President William Ruto said the government will build stalled and new roads in Nairobi County at the cost of Sh4 billion

According to the Head of State, the funds will be used to complete stalled road projects initiated by the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and build new feeder roads to improve mobility across the capital city.

“We will pick them all up, finish them and do more so that Nairobi can be the city we will all be proud to live in,” he said during a Sunday service at the United Pentecostal Church of Kenya in Dagoretti North.

The President stressed the importance of Nairobi to Kenya’s progress, stating that the city’s development is key to the nation’s advancement.

“Nairobi cannot remain behind as other regions of Kenya make progress, and there’s no way Kenya will move forward if Nairobi lags behind,” he said.

He also pledged to rehabilitate and clean up the Nairobi River within two years, revealing that the government is finalising contracts for the Nairobi River Basin upgrading project, which will begin by the end of January.

“I have told the people of this city to give me this year and the next, and Nairobi River will be clean,” he added.
