New twist: Pakistan media claim Arshad Sharif was tortured before death

Probe into the death of Pakistani Arshad Sharif has taken a new turn as media reports from Pakistani now claim the journalist was tortured before his death.

According to an autopsy report cited by Pakistani media, Sharif was tortured for over two hours before being shot in the head and right lung at close range.

In the autopsy report conducted by a committee constituted by Pakistani officials, Sharif was pushed out of his vehicle and tortured for almost three hours, as evidenced by his plucked-out fingernails and two fractured fingers.

Based on the Pakistani media, he was put back in his car seat after the murder to make it look like a “mistaken identity” incident. All of Sharif’s post-mortem reports have been finished, with the exception of one that might be released in a week.

The initial post-mortem examination by the Pakistani authorities last month also revealed that a bullet fragment was found lodged in Sharif’s chest that was missed by the Kenyan pathologists.

The reports by the Pakistani media contradict the postmortem examination conducted by Kenyan authorities that indicated Sharif died due to multiple injuries. The Pakistan High Commissioner to Kenya, Saqlain Syedah confirmed the findings in October.

“We have already done the post-mortem, showing that he was shot between his shoulder and head. It was a mishap that happened by the Kenyan police between Kajiado and Nairobi, which they have ruled a case of mistaken identity and that they were looking for a stolen car, They said they did not see the registration number clearly,” said Syedah.

The new revelations throw another twist to the already puzzling tale of how Sharif met his death with Kenya and Pakistan differing on the cause of death.

On the one hand, Kenyan police claim the shooting was a case of mistaken identity, while the Pakistani government claims the incident was murder and that investigation are still ongoing.

According to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa), investigations show that police officers were involved in the killing.

Ipoa made their statement hours after Pakistani Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah pointed a figure to the Kenyan authorities saying they knew what happened.

Earlier this week, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah told journalists: “Arshad Sharif’s death is not a case of mistaken identity — I can say, and, on the evidence we have so far, this prima facie is a targeted killing.”

“We still need to obtain more (evidence) to confirm all this … and we have asked the Kenyan government for more data,” he added.
