Pakistan minister: Evidence suggest Arshad Sharif’s death was planned
Pakistan interior minister Rana Sanaullah now says journalist, Arshad Sharif’s death was not an accidental shooting according to evidence from investigations.
The minister says the two brothers Waqar and Khurram Ahmad, who were hosting Sharif in Kenya, were not yet off the hook as they still had a number of questions to respond to.
The Ammodump Kweni business, where Sharif, was last seen alive, is owned by the two brothers, who were born in Pakistan but now reside in Canada.
“Arshad Sharif’s death is not a case of mistaken identity – I can say, and, on the evidence we have so far, this prima facie is a targeted killing,” he added as he rejected a version of the incident given by the Kenya police that Sharif was shot and killed by officers at a roadblock on Magadi Road in Kajiado County.
“We still need to obtain more (evidence) to confirm all this … and we have asked the Kenyan government for more data,” he added.
Sanaullah said the three-member security team that was sent to Nairobi to unravel the death of the journalist had given him a brief.
He added that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will reach out to his counter President William Ruto in an effort to promote more cooperation in resolving the puzzle over the killing.
“We will now ask the foreign office to contact the Kenyan government, and the prime minister will also speak to the Kenyan president,” the minister said.
According to a police report issued a day after the shooting, police officers on the lookout for vehicle thieves opened fire on Sharif’s vehicle as it sped through their roadblock without halting.
Investigations into the death are ongoing by among others Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
Four officers attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) at the Magadi Training College were questioned in October and their firearms were confiscated by detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
