Miraa farmers to get KES 130 million budgetary support, CS Linturi says
Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi says the government will allocate KES 130 million for miraa farmers in the next financial year 2023/2024 in an effort to revamp production.
According to CS Linturi, since 2018, the government has spent over KES 230 million in the construction of miraa sheds, water dams and water pans, and boreholes in Meru and Embu counties.
According to reports, the land under miraa crop is estimated at around 70,000 hectares in the county with an estimated export earnings of KES 6 billion annually.
“I am proud to inform you that the 2013 parliamentary select committee formed into the matters relating to miraa recommended, among others, the amendment of the Crop Act 2013 to include miraa in the first schedule of the Act and this was achieved through a statute law miscellaneous amendment Act number seven of 2016,” he said.
The budgetary allocation of KES 130 million is to cushion miraa growers from the challenges brought about by the ban of miraa in the European markets four years ago.
