The Kilifi county government has raised concern over a debt of KES 30 billion owed to the devolved government by land owners.
Governor Gideon Mung’aro said there was a surge in the number of land owners in the county but noted a large number of the land owners failed to remit land rates to the county.
“All the land rates debt together with interest is estimated to be KES 30 billion because people have not paid for many years. They are used to not paying and no action has ever been taken against them,” he said.
The county boss announced a 50 percent waiver for land rates and accrued interest for a period of 30 days occasioned by many residents claiming that the hard economic times had affected their economic lives hence they had no money to pay.
“Upon lapse of this period, the county government of Kilifi will prosecute or repossess the parcels of land for disposal,” he cautioned.
He further stated Kilifi county’s plans to improve the lives of the people including provision of clean and safe water, improved health care, tourism development, better road infrastructure and development of sports and early childhood education foundation saying that the KES 30 billion debt would help in these projects.
