Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro orders sacked casual workers back to work

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro has ordered more than 900 casual employees of the county to go back to work a day after they were laid off by the County Public Service Board.

Mung’aro said that the casuals were sacked behind his back and he also ordered the County Secretary Anorld Mkare to furnish his office with the list of all county employees for auditing to weed out ghost workers.

“I ordered the list of county employees but instead of getting the report, I came to learn that all casual laborers had been sacked without my knowledge. I have asked all sacked employees to go back to work and revoked their sacking letters so that we can conduct a thorough audit and if any officer will be found to have listed ghost workers, he or she will be relieved of his or her duties and disciplinary actions are taken,” said Mung’aro in his office on Thursday, September 8.

He also directed that the casuals be paid their salary areas for the last two months of July and August adding that those who sacked the casuals were out to spoil his name.

He wondered why the casuals were not sacked before the general elections yet they had been working since 2013.

“During the campaigns, I was told that the county has thousands of casuals but now I am being told that there are only 915 casuals. I want to get the complete list before summoning them for a head count. When the officials fail to bring me the report I will sack them instead of sacking the casuals,” he said.

Hundreds of casual employees flocked to the Governor’s office to protest their sacking and blamed the former governor Amason Kingi-led administration for keeping them as casuals since 2013.

Millicent Ayanga who has worked as a casual laborer for nine years thanked Governor Mung’aro for intervening and welcomed the audit.

“I started working in 2013 and up to date, I have not been employed. He has promised us that he will employ us after the headcount,” she said.

Caleb Otieno said that he had worked for the devolved unit as an inspectorate intelligence officer for ten years but has never been employed on a permanent and pensionable basis.

“We served the Kingi regime and there were issues and I thank Governor Mung’aro for calling for a head count so that he can account for his workers and the actions by the CPSB were against the law and it was a cover-up for ghost workers,” he said.
