Kenyan injured in Albania admitted in Kenyatta Referral hospital
The State Department for Diaspora Affairs last evening airlifted a critically injured Kenyan from Albania.
According to a press release by the department, Joyce Aoko, a Kenyan who was working in Tirana, Albania, was brutally attacked by unknown persons at her place of work in August 2022 which led to serious injuries.
“She was hospitalized for treatment and has been in critical condition ever since. Unfortunately, she needed specialized neurological care which was not available in Albania,” said the release in part.
The State Department of Diaspora Affairs said it learned of the plight of Aoko from the Kenyan Mission in Rome, on January 11, 2023, and began talks with the Republic of Albania.
The department felt it was prudent to bring her home to complete her journey of healing among her loved ones and began plans to evacuate her.
Yesterday, January 25, the government airlifted Aoko, her mother alongside a medical team from Albania to Wilson Airport.
She then moved to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) for further treatment.
“While we continued to urge the government of the Republic of Albania to conduct speedy and thorough investigations to bring the perpetrators to book,” said the department.
The Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Ms. Roseline K Njogu shared the news of her arrival on Twitter, saying, “Today was a good day at Diaspora Affairs. We mounted a medical evacuation of Joyce who was injured and in critical care in Albania since Aug 2022.”
