Kenyan creative Angela Ndambuki receives regional award

International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa Angela Ndambuki has been recognized by Pace Seters Awards, East African chapter for her  contribution to policy advocacy for the creative industry in the Sub-Saharan Africa region.

Ndambuki leads IFPI’s efforts to improve legislative frameworks and increase recognising industry performance rights to levels where record labels and self-released artists are fairly remunerated for use of their recordings.

She is also the chairperson of the Kenya Association of Music Producers, and chairs the Intellectual Property Committee at Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KNCCI).

She’s a former CEO at the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK).

In 2022 IFPI piracy report indicated that piracy is a major threat to the music industry in East Africa. According to the report, Kenya had 50 million visits to illegal music sites between June 2020 to June 2021. As a result, right holders lose billions of shillings in revenue.

“I take this moment to thank the Pacesetters Awards East Africa chapter for recognizing the policy work that we do in the Sub-Saharan region as the global voice of the recording industry – the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).”

“Music plays a critical role in job creation and contributes to a country’s GDP. The digital revolution has enhanced music consumption in significant ways and created great opportunities for our artistes and music investors to grow our music business. Online piracy, however, is a major threat to the recorded music business, and it is incumbent that governments in the region enhance content protection and enforcement laws including site blockings, takedown and staydown notices” Ndambuki commented while receiving the award.

According to the IFPI Global Music Report 2023 the Sub Saharan region was the fastest growing region globally for the year 2022, recording a steep percentage increase in revenue growth of 34.7 percent, and consequently the only region to register more than 30 percent growth.

However, the organization noted there’s a lot to be done in terms of translating this percentage growth into actual value that corresponds to the region’s market potential.

This couldn’t be more critical at a time when AI is attempting to disrupt the recorded music value chain. Right holders depend on a sound legislative and policy environment that speak to the realities of the time and global practice.

Last December Angela Ndambuki was named the East Africa’s Personality of the Year in the Pacesetters Awards in Kampala.

The awards are held on an annual basis to celebrate key industry leaders for their innovation, exemplary leadership and transformational initiatives.

In 2022, the organizers took note of IFPI’s role in enhancing management of recorded music through the introduction of the ISRC, a standard recording code used to identify sound recordings and music video recordings globally.
