Govt sets minimum pay for security guards at Sh30,000 a month
Private security guards now have a reason to smile after the government published a Gazette notice compelling their employers to pay them a minimum of Sh30,000 in gross pay per month, as it seeks to better their terms of service and benefits.
This will be a major boost to at least one million private security guards employed by 2,000 security companies in the country.
In a gazette notice published by the Private Security Regulator Authority, any employer who will fail to adhere to this directive will be fined Sh2 million and if the court deems fit, could also be both imprisoned and fined.
The new salary outlook proposed by the Authority includes a minimum basic pay of Sh18,994, house allowance of Sh2,850, overtime allowance of Sh8,157 summing up the total gross pay at Sh30,000.
Minus statutory deductions, which include the National Social Security Fund (1080), Social Health Insurance Fund (825), Pay As You Earn (1,229) and affordable Housing Levy (450), the minimum amount landing in the private security guards’ bank accounts every end month should be Sh26,415.
“A person who hires, employees or otherwise engages the services of private security service provider and pays or remunerates them below the mandated basic minimum wage prescribed herein commits an offence and shall be liable to a fine or to both such fine and imprisonment in the case of a natural person and Sh2 million in the case of a
corporate,” Fazul Mohamed, the PSRA Director General stated.
Also, the Authority has commenced nationwide registration, licensing and issuance of Guard Force Numbers (GFN), to individual private security service providers including private security guards, corporate security officers and all persons providing security services.
It will not matter whether such a person has been employed by a government institution, agencies or bodies, and/or by any individual, security companies, corporate entities, organisation, associations and or any other entity recognised by the law, the terms of employment will be the same, the Authority has stated.
This means even security guards hired to protect individuals’ private home are entitled to this consolidated salary, as long as they meet requirements set by the sector’s regulator.
