Family demands justice, alleges cover-up as Eric Maigo is laid to rest in Kisii

Relatives of murdered Nairobi Hospital Finance Director Eric Maigo have demanded justice for their kin, alleging a ploy to cover up the killing.

Speaking during Mr Maigo’s burial in Keumbu, Kisii County on Friday, the relatives, who did not want TV cameras in the home and accused journalists of misreporting the incident, said they wanted to know the truth about the brutal murder of their kin.

Mr Maigo’s grandfather led the family in demanding justice for the slain finance chief.

“I am very sad and hurt by the killing of my grandson. Stop killing people. God has commanded us to respect life. I pray that God will comfort my children (Maigo’s parents),” he said.

Reverend Abel Ocharo, who stood with the family during introductions at the funeral, urged the four high-profile lawyers who had come to pay their respects to take up the case and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“People here are educated, there is no need to cheat. You tell us a girl came into the house. Why don’t we have footage of her entering the house? Our good learned lawyers here, do not let these questions be buried with our son. He is dead, yes, but do not let justice die for him,” said Pastor Ocharo.

He added: “Go and have a meeting and see how you can have a strong case. We want to know the truth. We know that Maigo gave a report to Nairobi Hospital and his work was praised and he was even promised a promotion, and they killed him. We are angry. The government should investigate this matter vigorously, not hide”.

Mr Maigo was found dead in his home on 15 September 2023. A post-mortem examination revealed that he had been stabbed 25 times.

A teenager has been named as the main suspect in the murder and was arrested on Tuesday by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The girl, who hails from Kibra, was caught on CCTV scaling the perimeter wall of the victim’s house in Woodley Estate.

A Nairobi court allowed police to remand the suspect in custody for 21 days pending investigations.

Maigo was born on 26 November 1986. He was admitted to Nairobi Hospital in 2020. In July 2023, he was appointed Acting Finance Director of the hospital following the retirement of his superior and served in that capacity until his untimely and tragic death.

The deceased, who left no family of his own, was described by his loved ones as a caring family member, musician, outdoorsman, avid cyclist, football fan, loyal friend, industry integrator and a giant among men.

The fourth born in the family, Maigo is the son of Zebedeoh and Dinah Ondari. His mother is a teacher and his father an accountant.

In their tribute, his parents said they were deeply hurt and traumatised by the manner of his death.

“No human being, past, present or future, should have to go through this kind of suffering,” said Mr Onchari.
