Drama as police arrest Lesedi Developers boss after leaving court
Litigants at Thika Magistrate’s Court were treated to a rare drama when police officers ambushed and arrested a Thika property firm boss just after he left the courtroom.
Geoffrey Kahungi Kiragu, the founder of Lesedi Developers Limited, was grabbed, handcuffed and whisked away by the detectives as he emerged from the courtroom after a mention of a matter in which he is facing 12 counts of defrauding land buyers of Sh5.47 million.
Initially, Kiragu had sensed that his goose was cooked and had remained in the courtroom even after the session had ended.
The police pounced on him as soon as he stepped out of the court as the ‘victims’ who had crowded the court cheered.
Reports on where Kiragu was taken are still unclear, although his close associates revealed that he was taken to Nairobi Central Police Station before being transferred to Kangema County in Murang’a, where he was released late at night.
His arrest is believed to be linked to alleged fake land deals in which he is accused of defrauding land buyers of millions of shillings.
Kiragu is currently free on Sh5 million bail with a surety in the same amount. Thika Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo also gave Kiragu the option of paying a cash bail of Sh5 million.
The court had earlier urged both the accused and the complainants to consider the settlement option. Judge Atambo told Kiragu to consider refunding the land buyers their money.
She also urged the complainants to seek legal representation to speed up the process of negotiating their compensation.
When the matter came up for mention before the Thika Principal Magistrate V Asiyo on Monday, Kiragu’s lawyer Daniel Gachau told the court that the accused and the complainants had held several meetings aimed at resolving the matter.
He noted that his client had given the complainants the option of getting another plot of land, but the complainants wanted their money back.
The judge adjourned the matter to 7 December 2023, when the court will issue pre-trial orders.
The case will be heard on 25 January 2024.
