Pastor charged with defrauding businesswoman Sh2.6m in cattle deal

A pastor has been charged with defrauding a faithful-cum-businesslady Sh2.6 million in a livestock rearing business that never was.

Pastor Johnson Kintalel Nkuku denied before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Robinson Ondieki that he conned Yvonne Teeti that colossal amount of money.

While testifying before Mr Ondieki, Ms Teeti told the court that she gave the money to her spiritual father due to the trust she had in him to purchase 100 heads of cattle for her investment.

Asked by state prosecutor whether she knew Mr Nkuku, Ms Teeti responded that she met the suspect seven years prior to the incident.

She told the court she heeded an advice from the pastor to invest and therefore “I could not disagree with the voice of God”.

She told the court that Nkuku, the preacher and pastor of Dominion Church situated in Narok, came up with the idea of supporting his spiritual daughter -the victim- on a cattle rearing business where he could offer shelter to the purchased cattle.

They agreed that Ms Teeti would be sending money to him since he knew where to source about 100 heads of cattle and in addition to that, he had vast experience in livestock-rearing.

She told the court that transactions were mostly done via M-Pesa and in cash where no agreement was made, but only witnessed by her friend who will appear before the honourable court to testify.

According to the bank and M-Pesa statements presented before the court, between December 8 and December 10, 2020, she withdrew a total of Sh1,020,000 from Co-Operative Bank of Kenya, after which the amount was handed to the preacher, witnessed by her friend.

“I trusted the pastor so much and I could not disagree with whatever he said to the extent that I never entered into a signed agreement nor visited his place and see the purchased heads of cattle,” she said.

The court also heard that trust between her and the preacher grew stronger to the point that when she bought a pick-up, the preacher told her that God wanted her to hand the vehicle to him to pray for it and for anointing.

When she had over the pick-up for special prayers, he stayed with that vehicle for a prolonged period of six months claiming not to be done with the prayers.

The court heard that the complainant would later seek the intervention of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

She continued to send the money to the preacher until by 2023 the total had accumulated to a whopping Sh2,664,109 and that is when she requested to go and see the livestock.

She told the court that the preacher started to behave weirdly, giving reasons that he was not at home because he was engaged elsewhere for ministry purposes. When she persistently insisted on paying him a visit, his phones went off.

“I noticed something was not right when I realised he was cutting me off and never admitted me to visit his home where he claimed the herd was. It was at that point I decided to report the matter to the DCI,” the court heard.

The preacher was then arrested and presented before court to face charges.

Mr Nkuku was charged that on diverse dates between March 1, 2021, and April 30, 2023, within Nairobi CBD with intent to defraud, obtained from Ms Teeti a sum of Sh2,664,109 by pretending that he was in a position to buy her a herd of cows, a fact he knew to be false.

Ms Teeti was at a point, overwhelmed by emotions, urged the court to fight for her to recover the money lost in that scam.

“Your honour, I beg this court to fight for me to get justice and recover my money,” she pleaded.

The court was adjourned to April 15, 2024, when the hearing will proceed.
