DP Gachagua chairs intergovernmental meeting to develop a drought mitigation strategy
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has on Friday presided over an interagency forum attended by international development partners to establish a strategy to alleviate the country’s drought predicament.
According to Gachagua, the group agreed to form county coordinating teams that would be co-chaired by Governors and County Commissioners as the focal point for pushing the humanitarian response. The county teams are expected to meet on Tuesday.
He also stated that a central command has been established to enable effective coordination of assistance distribution in all impacted counties.
Speaking after chairing a meeting that was attended by Governors from ASAL areas at his Harambee Annex office, the Gachagua said efforts were being made to ensure no Kenyan should die of hunger.
Instead of delegating to their juniors, Gachagua asked Governors and County Commissioners to head county coordination committees that will develop lists of persons in need.
“The National Government will mobilise resources while county governments have agreed to provide resources. Our development partners have also agreed to support us in containing the famine situation,” Gachagua said
To improve accountability, the county coordinating teams will be involved in distribution.
“The teams will then come to the national secretariat that is domiciled here in my office for intervention and supply of relief food,”said Gachagua.
He also advised counties to use the resources at their disposal while waiting for further funding from the national government to handle the crisis.
Gachagua stated that President William Ruto has requested that everyone involved in the exercise meet every ten days.
Finance CS Ukur Yattani stated that KSh 4 billion has been put aside to combat starvation, with KSh 2 billion available at any time. According to Transport CS James Macharia, all transportation systems are in place to provide distribution logistics.
Water authorities throughout the country have mobilized 100 water browsers, which will be deployed in impacted areas. The KDF will provide water rigs and drill boreholes around the country, while the water ministry, in collaboration with the Treasury, will plan the installation of water tanks.
The Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) and the Red Cross will collaborate to purchase livestock whose meat will be distributed to schoolchildren.
The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) will be obligated to purchase and distribute food to affected locals.
Nathif Jamah (Garissa), Joshua Irungu (Laikipia), Ahmed Abdullahi (Wajir), Mohammed Khalif (Mandera), Mohamud Ali (Marsabit), Joseph Ole Lenku (Kajiado), Issa Timamy (Lamu), Lati Lelelit (Samburu), and Dhado Godhana of Tana River were among the governors present.
