Do Murang’a women make the best wives?
Women from Murang’a are said to make better wives than their counterparts from other regions; a popular notion is that a Murang’a woman is the last to be divorced or separated from her husband; These women say they are hardworking and do not depend entirely on their husbands to put food on the table.
Gladys Cheupe, a businesswoman in Murang’a town, says that girls in the county grow up close to their mothers and thus learn the virtues of womanhood as well as the traditions and customs of the Agikuyu community, making them some of the best wives in the country.
Known as ‘nyarari’ in the Kikuyu dialect, they claim that they are more connected to their communities and families and therefore tend to tolerate more when they marry than other women from the Mount Kenya region.
But they also lament the lack of support from Murang’a men, claiming that most of them have descended into alcoholism.
