CS Murkomen challenges North Rift leaders to unite and end insecurity
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has challenged leaders from warring communities in the North Rift region to unite and end the escalating banditry and cattle rustling activities.
The CS noted that he will personally take up the challenge and call all leaders from the Pokot, Turkana, Marakwet and Samburu communities.
He noted that criminals should be treated as individuals and there should not be a blanket condemnation.
“Pokots ,Marakwets ,Turkana’s and Tugens are peace loving and God fearing people only that we have few criminals. Someone who shoots, kills people and steals has no tribe or community and should carry his own cross as a criminal individual. We have a big problem in the region,” said Mr Murkomen.
He pointed out that the problem in the region was historical.
“It has historical injustices inside it. We have met as leaders for a long time and we shall continue doing it. Let the government continue doing the security operation but we as leaders should come together and solve the problem,” he said.
Speaking on Friday at Chewoyet high school in West Pokot County during a thanks giving ceremony and launch of the 4 year strategic plan of the school Mr Murkomen noted that there is a need for development to take place in the region.
‘ Am Pokot who is Marakwet and vice-versa and I have no shame. Am not an inciter.Justice must be the cornerstone of our unity. That justice will come by eradicating bandits,” he said
Mr Murkomen noted that the Government will open up all marginalized areas by setting up infrastructure like roads and schools.
“This is the only way of taming insecurity in the region. We must get out the supply of crooks. Having an illiterate person with a gun is worse. He does not know the meaning of life,” he said. Mr Murkomen noted that the President is not only committed to flush out bandits but also come up with a long development agenda to change Kerio Valley from a valley of death to a valley of people and prosperity.
“Am not happy when I see Pokots,Turakanas,Marakwets and Tugens dying every day. It is a shame,” he said.
He said that all roads that were under construction will continue.
“All roads are like Cheap Korinis-Paris-Sina. Kabichbich-Kipat-Chesumet,Chorwai,Kapkanyar –Kapcherop, Tamkal ,Konyao-Kiwawa –Alale,Makutano-Kabichibich-Sondany,Chepareria-Chepnyal , Talau- Makutano ,Town-Chewoyet and Forest roads will be completed. We have told contractors to work hard or cancel their works,” he said.
Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong called on the Government to ensure that bandits are nabbed.
“We need more resources like schools, roads and affirmative action. Children should learn for free for 15 years. We support the operations but should do so to all communities and respect human rights.
He called on the security team to be effective.
“There is curfew but the police are only chasing up those in towns and roads. We want more roads to be like other communities,” he said.
Tiaty MP William Kamket noted that the region needs peace and development.
He hit out that the opposition over the mass action.
“Those bringing violence in the Country should know that the constitution should be respected. If there is a question in any elective position of an MP or member of county assembly, it should be taken to the high court and that of the President should go to the Supreme Court. Anything beyond that is unconstitutional and illegal. If the opposition leader repeats what he did during the 2017 general elections of swearing in himself it will be treason. He was forgiven and if he repeats he must face the law,” he said.
West Pokot senator Julius Murgor said that they are ready to sit down as leaders and tame insecurity in the region.
“Only few leaders are inciters. We should stop following the tail of a cow,” he said.
Rev Murgor said that the opposition leader failed to bring evidence in court and should stop putting the country in
Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto said that there is a need to develop in the area.
“Insecurity is happening due to lack of development,” he said.
West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin called on the opposition to put Kenya first.
“They should respect the law. Those who want to exercise their rights should put Kenya first. Mass action will not help this country. They should stop it,” he said.
