Consumer rights to be taught in Junior, Senior Secondary starting January
Starting January 2023, students transitioning to Junior Secondary School (Grade 7) will be taught consumer obligations rights, and remedies, in a bid to promote public knowledge on the subject.
The move is the result of a collaboration between the Kenya Competition Authority and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to incorporate consumer rights and market regulation into the Curriculum for Junior and Senior Secondary Schools.
Over 1.2 million students will benefit from the concepts related to the two disciplines, which will be taught in subjects such as Home Science and Business Studies.
CAK stated in a December 14 press release that by 2024 and 2025, the principles will be taught in at least 20 subjects in Grades 8 and 9, respectively, and then in over 30 subjects at Senior Secondary (Grades 10, 11, and 12).
Students will be taught the disciplines through classwork activities in which they will learn about businesses’ obligations to consumers, reflect on their roles as producers and consumers of goods and services, and contribute to socioeconomic goals.
Students will discover consumer issues in their neighbourhood and discuss potential solutions through practical assignments, poems, theatre, music, and dance, among other things, in order to improve the topics taught in the classroom.
“The objective of this partnership with the KICD is to prepare and impart young citizens with the capacity to make informed consumer choices at adulthood, especially when faced with different products and services due to increased competition and market complexities,” said Wang’ombe Kariuki, the Authority’s Director-General.
He adds, “This is informed by emerging realities, especially in digital financial services.”
The new changes according to KICD Director Prof. Charles Ong’ondo will broaden the perspective of consumer awareness and appreciation of the importance of competition in markets among young learners. He noted that in the past consumer literacy matters have been narrowly addressed in Business Studies.
“Consumer-related issues affect us all irrespective of age. By mainstreaming them in the curriculum, we shall equip our young citizens with the requisite knowledge, skills, and values to safeguard them from exploitation by unscrupulous business persons and organisations,” said Ong’ondo.
