Body of man who died while taking selfies at Gicheru Falls found
The search for a 26-year-old man who tragically slipped and fell into the turbulent waters of Gicheru Water Falls in Kirinyaga County has come to a somber conclusion.
Local authorities, spearheaded by Gichugu Sub-County Police Commander Edward Ndirangu, successfully recovered the body of the man, identified as Fidel Omondi Otieno, on Thursday evening at approximately 6:30 pm.
The operation was a collaborative effort between local divers, police officers, and concerned residents.
Otieno, a young man employed at a hotel in Nairobi’s Lavington area, had embarked on an excursion to Kiringa River’s waterfalls alongside five companions from the city.
Tragically, their adventure took a devastating turn when a moment meant for a selfie turned into a fatal accident.
Eyewitnesses in the area reported hearing piercing screams emanating from the riverbank, prompting them to rush to the scene.
What unfolded before them was a heart-wrenching tragedy, as Mr. Otieno had slipped and plunged into the raging river, despite valiant efforts by those present to save him.
A local resident familiar with the river’s dynamics noted that the Kiringa River can become particularly treacherous, especially during the rainy season.
The river’s swift currents and significant water volume can pose a grave danger, particularly to visitors who may not be acquainted with the area’s terrain and inherent risks.
Regrettably, Gatimu revealed that such incidents have become a recurring occurrence, with an unfortunate annual pattern of drowning incidents involving visitors who come seeking the scenic beauty of the falls.
Another resident, Robert Gachoki, expressed the community’s collective sense of helplessness as they struggled in vain to rescue Mr. Otieno from the river’s grasp.
In light of this tragic incident, Gachoki emphasised the paramount importance of exercising caution when venturing near the river, especially during the rainy season. He urged all visitors to prioritise their safety and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further heartrending accidents of this nature.
The recovery of Fidel Omondi Otieno’s body stands as a sobering reminder of the perils that can accompany the pursuit of natural beauty, underscoring the imperative for vigilance and safety awareness when exploring such picturesque but potentially hazardous environments.
