Body of 5-year-old girl recovered from Nyamindi River: Mother still missing
The body of the five-year-old girl who drowned with her mother in the Nyamindi River in Kirinyaga County has been found.
However, her mother’s body is yet to be recovered following the incident on Saturday, May 4, which has left everyone baffled.
The mother, Maureen Wangui, 29, jumped into the swollen river with her daughter strapped to her back and was swept downstream.
On Sunday, May 5, residents fetching water from the river spotted the body of the minor, identified as Precious Wairimu, floating in the water at Gichogo village and alerted the police who rushed to the scene and recovered it.
The area police commander, Mr Johnson Wachira, said the child’s body had been taken to the morgue while the search for her mother’s body continued.
Mr Wachira said police were working with residents to ensure the woman’s body was found.
The woman secretly went to the river and threw herself into the raging waters.
A guard at the nearby coffee factory witnessed the shocking incident and alerted the authorities.
It was not immediately clear why the woman made such a decision.
The family said they were shocked to hear what had happened.
“We are still in mourning and we are calling on the government to ensure that the mother’s body is also found,” said one of the relatives, Stephen Maembe.
The family said Wangui sneaked out of the house and disappeared.
“She was washing clothes inside the compound when she disappeared unnoticed,” said Mr Ngombo Kuruma, Wangui’s grandfather.
Wangui, who hails from Embu, was visiting her grandparents in Kirinyaga when she took her life and that of her daughter.
“We are yet to know why Wangui took such an action that has left us in mourning,” another family member said.
A local resident, Ms Catherine Muthoni, said the watchman saw the woman approaching before she suddenly jumped into the river, whose banks had burst due to heavy rains.
“It was the watchman who saw what happened and reported it to the police.
