Atwoli re-elected Vice President of International Trade Union Confederation
Central Organization of Trade Unions, COTU (K), Secretary General Francis Atwoli has been re-elected for the fourth term to the position of Vice President of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) during the ongoing 5th Congress in Melbourne, Australia.
Atwoli’s name was put forth on the Congress’s floor and received unanimous approval from the delegates, giving him a second four-year term as the ITUC’s leader.
Atwoli acknowledged and appreciated the huge trust his trade union colleagues around the world continue to place in him to serve them in his acceptance speech to the Congress.
“The position you have just bestowed on me this morning isn’t an easy one, you are sending me to war, to fight for working men and women wherever they are in the world, am only your soldier whose actions will always come from you, the commanders, and I will never let you down, I will stand for your interests and put up my life for you always…” he said.
Atwoli was also elected, without objection, to the seven-member Credentials Committee during the ongoing congress. This committee’s job is to decide who is eligible to participate in the ITUC elections as a delegate. Additionally, it provides information on the makeup of the various delegations for each nation as well as the scope of each vote.
Atwoli was, equally, proposed by a delegate from Tanzania and seconded without opposition by his colleagues in the region, including trade union leaders from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, and Mauritius, among others. He was elected, unopposed, as a titular member to the General Council of the ITUC to represent the Eastern Africa Region.
With more than 200 million members from 163 countries, the ITUC continues to be the largest trade union organization in the world with its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
In addition to being the Vice President of the ITUC, Atwoli is the President of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), which has its headquarters in Accra, Ghana, and is a member of the ILO Governing Body (Geneva).
The Congress adjourns on November 22, 2022.
