63 arrested in joint crackdown on illegal pharmaceutical practices
A joint targeted inspection by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and the Kenya Police Service has resulted in the arrest of 63 people in various regions of Kenya.
At least 143 boxes of various health products and technologies were seized during the inspection exercise, which took place between December 18th and 23rd.
According to Julius Kaluai, Head of Inspectorate and Enforcement at the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, the inspection focused on investigating, prosecuting, and reporting on illegal pharmaceutical outlets, particularly targeting wholesalers.
Kaluai stated that 69 targeted inspections were conducted during the exercise, and cautioned licensed practitioners against leaving their practices in the hands of unqualified personnel.
“The affected practitioners shall further be subjected before the Board’s disciplinary committee, in addition to court prosecution,” Kaluai said.
He also advised the public to avoid buying medicines from chemists that do not display their names or have no signages, as this is a key indicator of an illegal pharmaceutical premises.
Kaluai further urged the public to always verify the registration details of pharmacy practitioners at the community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies as well as any other drug dispensing facilities.
