CS Kuria sparks reactions online with GMO, death remarks

Moses Kuria, the Trade Cabinet Secretary, has stirred reactions online after he made controversial remarks implying eating genetically modified organisms (GMOs) crops can cause death.

The CS publicly acknowledged that the 10 million GMO maize shipments he permitted to enter the country duty-free can be added to the list of fatalities in Kenya.

“We have so many things that can kill us in the country. Being in this country, you are a candidate for death,” he said.

“And because so many things compete for death, there is nothing wrong with adding GMOs to that list. That is why we have deliberately allowed GMO until we are satisfied that we have enough maize, the staple food,” Kuria added.

So, are Moses Kuria’s comments accurate or inaccurate? Here is a summary of what you should know about GMOs and your health.

What is a GMO?

A GMO (genetically modified organism) is a plant, animal, or microorganism that has had its genetic material (DNA) changed using technology that generally involves the specific modification of DNA, including the transfer of specific DNA from one organism to another. Scientists often refer to this process as genetic engineering.

Are GMO foods on the market safe to eat?

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that various GM organisms contain various genes inserted in various ways. This means that it is impossible to generalize about the safety of all GM foods and that each individual GM food and its safety should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

According to the WHO, GM foods that are currently on the market in other countries have passed safety tests and are not likely to pose risks to human health.

“In addition, no effects on human health have been shown as a result of the consumption of such foods by the general population in the countries where they have been approved,” WHO says.

So, Yes. GMO foods are carefully studied before they are sold to the public to ensure they are as safe as the foods we currently eat. Various studies show that GMOs do not affect you differently than non-GMO foods.

Do GMOs affect your health?

A study conducted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that compared to conventional crops, GMO crops do not increase risks to humans or the environment.

The research, which is the result of a sweeping review of nearly 900 publications on the effects of genetically modified crops on human health and the environment says that GMO foods are as healthful and safe to eat as their non-GMO counterparts.

There is evidence from numerous studies that some GMO plants have been modified to increase their nutritional value.

Do GMOs cause allergies or allergic reactions?

According to WHO, there have been no reported allergic reactions to the GM foods that are currently available.

The transfer of genes from frequently allergenic organisms to non-allergic organisms is discouraged, according to the World Health Organization, unless it can be shown that the protein product of the transferred gene is not allergenic.

“While foods developed using traditional breeding methods are not generally tested for allergenicity, protocols for the testing of GM foods have been evaluated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and WHO,” the health organization says.

Conclusion

Moses Kuria’s statement is MISLEADING.

The National Academy of Science, the World Health Organization, and numerous other significant scientific organizations from around the world have examined the research on GE foods and have not discovered any proof that they are harmful. There have been no reports of GE food-related illnesses, accidents, or environmental damage. Foods made with genetic engineering are equally safe as natural foods.
