KCSE grading changes, everything you need to know
The ministry of education has reviewed the grading structure for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), as per the recommendations of the presidential working party, on education reforms.
Education Cabinet secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, while launching the 2023 national examination calendar, noted that only two mandatory subjects, Mathematics and one language, will be used in the new grading system.
While speaking at the Mitihani house in Nairobi, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, disclosed that a new structure will be implemented to the 2023 KCSE examination grading system.
This now means that KNEC has done away with the previous system where 5 subjects were mandatory, a method expected to increase the number of candidates qualifying for their upper education.
This is part of the recommendations from the presidential working party on education reforms, which discredited the 8-4-4 system as a disadvantage to other learners.
More than 3.5 million candidates will be sitting their national examinations this year, including the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment for Grade 6 learners, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
The ministry also vowing to uphold the integrity of the exams, and saying it will allow only the center managers and their deputies to be at the examination centers during the exercise.
The teachers service commission has vetted 223 supervisors and invigilators, 37,731 examiners as well as 71,760 center managers.
All of them have been directed to appear in person for all the meetings at the sub county level and not to delegate their duties.
The ministry says it is adequately resourced to deliver the 2023 national examination that will be supervised for the first time after the COVID-19 disruption of the education calender.
