South B vendors agree to stop roadside trading after meeting with MCA Chege
Small vendors from South B area in Nairobi South Ward have agreed to remove their commodities from the roadside following a successful community engagement meeting with the area’s Member of County Assembly, Ms Waithera Chege.
This follows a notice issued by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) asking vendors to move off the roadside to allow the road to be used for its primary purpose.
The notice drew the attention of the MCA, which sought an appointment with the authority to address the issue, as the South B traders have no market near which to relocate their business.
“This is a unique case for South B traders because we don’t have a market where to operate from. But when they will hand over the market, we will hand over the roads. We are happy because they listen to us after a proper engagement, and as South B traders we have agreed that those who have shops should put their items inside the shops and those who are selling by the roadside should remove their commodities there,” Ms Waithera said.
In a meeting at his office on Saturday, the MCA asked all the traders to ensure that all the items are being sold from their shops and that no one will be spared if they are found hawking outside their shops.
“I could not wait for traders to be evicted from their small businesses. Following our meeting, we agree to engage with traders in the ward to ensure that there is no garbage being dumped on the road and in the drainage,” Ms Waithera said.
She has also said that when the construction of the modern market in South B center is completed, all the traders who are now spread across the roads will be able to have their areas of operation, and will be able to move out of the roads.
“President William Ruto listened to us and agreed to allocate Sh400 million towards the construction of the market here, in one of the public lands that had been grabbed.”
The residents have been in a running battle with the police for months to stop the private developer from grabbing the piece of land in South B centre that was earmarked for the market.
Recently, the County Government of Nairobi affirmed that the land belonged to the public and that the construction of the modern market would start before the year ended.
Also, the MCA said that they have earmarked some of the public spaces in South B which have been grabbed by the individuals, and will take action soon to reclaim them.
